According to Vogue, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have wardrobes fit for a princess -- except a little bit better. The 25-year-old Olsen twins beat out two of fashion's most influential ladies, Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton and her little sister Pippa, for the magazine's best-dressed siblings title.
The winning sibs grace the cover of Vogue's annual Best Dressed Issue wearing headbands with black lace veils; and, inside the pages, they recline in luxe robes.
"Are there any more chic, stylish, cool, and original sisters than Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen? They are incredibly stylish," Vogue fashion director Mark Holgate tells Reuters, calling the choice "kind of a no-brainer."
The ranking of the Olsens over the Middletons (who landed at just No. 9 on the mag's top-10 list!) is a little surprising, however -- not least of all because Mary-Kate and Ashley have made their share of worst-dressed lists, while the British socialites have never been seen in public with a single hair out of place. But Holgate says that's part of what makes the Olsen twins true originals.
"They get it right a lot of the time and then sometimes they don't get it right. That's actually great because it shows that it's their hands reaching into their wardrobes," says the editor. "They don't have someone telling them, 'This is cool, this is hot, this is what you should be wearing.' It comes from within them. It's instinctual."
That "instinctual" sense of style has taken Mary-Kate and Ashley from child actresses to respected runway designers, having launched heir successful couture label The Row in 2007. But they first became fashion icons three years earlier, when they came to New York City to attend classes at NYU.
"We were called eccentric and eclectic," the twins tell Vogue of their layered "Boho chic" style. "But we were just two California girls trying to dress for the New York winter."
Other sisters who scored on Vogue's best-dressed list include Elle and Dakota Fanning (No. 2), Beyonce and Solange Knowles (No. 7), actresses Rooney and Kate Mara (No. 10), and models Ruby and Lily Aldridge (No. 4).
One thing's still a little unclear, though: Why wasn't Mary-Kate and Ashley's little sister, indie it-girl Elizabeth Olsen, included in Vogue's round-up? Last time we checked, she was one of the Olsen siblings, too!
The new issue hits stands Nov. 15.
