Did you know that Saturday was Diwali, the Indian festival of lights? President Obama did, and this weekend, he became the first U.S. president to celebrate Diwali in the White House.
It's a holiday of peace, love and celebration, so why not celebrate with a fabulous Indian movie?
For first-time Bollywood movie watchers, we recommend Om Shanti Om, the 2007 hit starring gorgeous Indian mega-star Shah Rukh Khan (and his abs). Like most Bollywood films, it's three hours long, with an intermission. But wait until you see how much gets packed into those three hours! On its most basic level, it's the story of a Bollywood extra who falls in love with a leading lady. But this is literally the movie with everything: comedy, romance, murder, revenge, reincarnation, and of course, big musical numbers. It's great Bollywood 101: there's an homage to the classic Bollywood movies of the '60s and '70s, where the actors are CGI'd into famous scenes. And there's also a dramatic climax modeled after Phantom of the Opera, because why not? Om Shanti Om is one of the highest-grossing Hindi movies of all time, and we guarantee you'll have downloaded a few of its songs from iTunes before you reach the end.
