One Day Makeovers: Molly's Bedroom

Here's how iVillage home design expert Susanna Salk took 11-year-old Molly's bedroom from drab to fab!

Molly, 11, of New Preston, Conn., wanted to liven up her mostly white bedroom. She chose a boldly patterned coral and blue rug, but was unsure where to go from there and how to make the room come together. Enter home design expert Susanna Salk, who gave Molly's room a glam update in one day and for under $1,000. Here’s how Salk achieved the look.

Choose accessories that can stand up to a statement piece. Molly's colorful rug set the tone for the room. Salk chose pieces with bold shapes and patterns—the ikat chair and modern lamps—to anchor the floor covering.

Balance sophistication with fun. Salk brought in a glamorous mirror and graphic bedding, and then added a whimsical accent with the orange bird pillows. "Never get too serious," she says. "A child's room should be as imaginative as it is comfortable, but most of all it should be fun!"

Add a personal touch. Every kid wants to see her name in lights, and thanks to the oversized light-up letter "M" hung on the wall, Molly gets to do just that every day. "It looks awesome!" she says.
