After 10 years in their Congers, N.Y., house, Laurie and Dom Santulli decided their mudroom needed some sprucing up. The entry hall is one of the most trafficked areas of any home, and the Santulli's was showing some wear. Home design expert Susanna Salk gave the space an elegant update in one day and for under $1,000. Here's how she achieved the look.
Choose a high-impact color. "Painting is such a great, easy way to bring drama to a room," says Salk. She chose a warm yellow, Overjoy by Sherwin-Williams, and used an eggshell finish so that dirt and stains can be easily washed away.
Invest in stylish storage. A comfortable bench with secret storage underneath is the perfect spot to tuck away items. Salk also brought in an attractive basket to house shoes. "Your mudroom is one of the most important rooms in your house," she says, "so it should be just as stylish and functional as the rest of them."
Pare down. In the mudroom, Salk advises keeping only what is necessary for the current season. That makes it easy to stay organized and keeps the space looking tidy. Here are the items Salk used to make over Laurie and Dom's entry hall:
