Stephanie Plum, the heroine of Janet Evanovich's best-selling mystery novels, is finally coming to the big screen! The film adaptation of One for the Money, starring Katherine Heigl as the snack-food-scarfing bounty hunter, is due to hit theaters in January. Get a load of Heigl's Jersey accent in the trailer below!
From the beginning, Katherine Heigl has been a controversial choice to play Stephanie Plum; author Evanovich wanted Sandra Bullock or Anne Hathaway, and the first actress cast in the role was Reese Witherspoon. But this story is a romantic comedy at its heart, and Heigl is a rom-com pro. As a bonus, her streetwise attitude in this trailer is unexpectedly convincing -- we actually believe she could beat us up if we stole her Tastykakes.
The real casting genius, though, is in the supporting roles. The View's Sherri Shepherd gets to flaunt her comedy chops as Stephanie's hooker pal Lula. ("If you want information from Lula, you got to bring her a snack!") Hollywood legend Debbie Reynolds, last seen on Will & Grace, is perfect as the sassy, gun-toting Grandma Mazur. (There's a lady who's due for a comeback! Could she be the next Betty White?) Rescue Me's Daniel Sunjata and Irish actor Jason O'Mara round out the cast as Stephanie's hunky potential love interests; Grey's Anatomy fans may recognize O'Mara from a two-episode arc he did in 2008.
One for the Money will be released on January 27, 2012. If it's a hit, you can expect plenty of sequels in the pipeline: Evanovich's eighteenth Stephanie Plum book hits stores this November!
