Get Your Tissues! A New Olympic Ad Will Tug at Your Heartstrings One Month Before the Games Begin

Procter & Gamble (P&G) launches its latest 2012 Summer Olympics ad, part of its "Thank You Mom" campaign saluting every mom behind an Olympian.

It’s hard to believe but the 2012 Summer Games are just one month away and that means just 30 days left until athletes who trained much of their lives and in many cases much of their childhoods will get their Olympic moment. I thought of those athletes – from the gold medal all-around gymnastics favorite Jordyn Wieber to swimming champ Ryan Lochte to decathlete hopeful Ashton Eaton when I watched the latest Olympic ad that will likely make you cry and give you goose bumps -- at the same time. (That’s what happened to me but I must admit I do get emotional at anything Olympic related!)

The commercial by Procter & Gamble's Bounty brand called “Let the Spills Begin” is part of the consumer products company’s Olympic global marketing campaign, saluting and thanking all moms who have supported their children’s Olympic dreams. We don’t see moms in this ad.  Instead, we see young athletes, from a gymnast doing back flips in her family’s hallway to a soccer player bouncing a ball in his kitchen near plenty of dishes(!) to a boy using an ottoman as a pommel horse very close to a glass of chocolate milk, which could so easily topple over. That’s the point, after all, in this commercial for P&G's Bounty paper towels, with the narrator saying, “To every parent who sacrificed their home to an Olympic dream, we salute you.”

“What is great about the Olympics is that it is this worldwide event that really unites people under the common umbrella of sport and achievement,” Marc Pritchard, P&G’s Global Marketing and Brand Building Officer, told me during an interview when the company unveiled it’s “Thank You Mom” campaign in April with the stirring “Best Job” ad. That ad simulates the every day journeys of four young athletes from four different parts of the world, with their moms with them every step of the way.

“There is a real human achievement… so what we’ve attempted to do is come up with something that unites our brands under something that is common which is the universal insight and recognition of everything moms do and to thank them," said Pritchard.

The new ad, which has already had more than 1,000,000 views on YouTube, clearly is striking a chord with the audience. “I really loved this video,” said one commenter. “For some reason it made me tear up. Young ones and all their dreams. It was so sweet.” Said another, “I swear… they’re trying to make me cry. This is my childhood.” And then there was this: “My kids do this stuff all the time – does that mean I should expect future Olympians?”

Maybe. We bet if your kids wanted to pursue the Olympics, you’d support them 100% -- just like Jordyn Wieber, Ryan Lochte and Ashton Eaton’s moms did – even when their kids might have made a mess of the house!
