Author Uwem Akpan is going to be a household name in books clubs everywhere this weekend.
Akpan's Say You’re One Of Them is the latest selection in Oprah’s Book Club. Say You’re One Of Them is a collection of five stories set in Africa including the story of a eight-year-old child, whose 12-year-old sister works as a prostitute to support her family.
Oprah announced the book on the Oprah Winfrey Show on Friday; marking the first time she has selected a book of short stories since she started the literary feature in 1996.
The Nigerian Akpan received his master's degree from the University of Michigan in creative writing and is an ordained Jesuit priest.
On his Web site, Akpan writes, "I was inspired to write by the people who sit around my village church to share palm wine after Sunday Mass, by the Bible, and by the humour and endurance of the poor."
Previous selections of Oprah's Book Club include The Reader, House of Sand and Fog, and The Road, all of which developed into films.
As on Friday morning, Say You’re One Of Them ranked number 286 on the Amazon.com sales rank for books.
After Oprah’s syndicated talk show airs throughout the country today, how soon before Akpan is at the top of that list?
