Of the many rumors to hit the web about Beyonce and Jay-Z's daughter Blue Ivy Carter, the one suggesting that Oprah Winfrey was the tyke's godmother was among the most exciting. Sadly, the rumor, which caught fire on the Web Wednesday and Thursday, just isn't true. At least, that's what Winfrey's BFF Gayle King told CBS' The Early Show Friday morning.
"It's absolutely not true that she's the godmother," King explained. "She's friends with them, of course, and likes them both very much. She's working on sending them a baby gift. She hasn't even had time to send a baby gift because she's been away."
There is the very small chance that Beyonce, 30, and Jay-Z, 42, named Winfrey godmother without actually letting her know, but both we and King are skeptical that that's the case.
"Let me just say, if (that report is) true, it is news to her. It is news to her," King said. "You know, she was heading to South Africa when the baby was born."
It was hip-hop gossip site MediaTakeOut that first reported the news, adding that Jay-Z's best friend Tyran "Ty Ty" Smith was allegedly named godfather. It's unclear if that news is true at this time.
But even though the Oprah rumor appears to be untrue, it at least it got some funny responses from fans and celebrities before it was debunked. One of those came from comedian Kathy Griffin, who joked on Twitter: "R u fing kidding me??? Oprah is Blue Ivy's godmother??? Gwyneth must b PISSED." (Gwyneth Paltrow is one of Beyonce and Jay-Z's closest friends, and she was one of the first people to tweet about the news of Blue Ivy's birth on Jan. 7.)
While we're sure baby Blue won't want for anything, it is kind of a bummer that she'll be missing out on godmother gifts from Winfrey: perhaps a new car for Christmas, a paid vacation to Australia for a birthday present and (of course) plenty of great book suggestions. Whoever ends up actually being named Blue's godmother is going to have some big gift-giving shoes to fill!
