Oral Diabetes Medicines That Can Cause Low Blood Sugar

The following sulfonylurea medicines for diabetes can cause low blood sugar as a side effect.

  • Glimepiride (Amaryl)
  • Glipizide (Glucotrol)
  • Glyburide (such as DiaBeta, Glynase, Micronase)

Meglitinides work in the same way as sulfonylurea medicines and can also cause low blood sugar as a side effect. These include:

  • Nateglinide (Starlix).
  • Repaglinide (Prandin).

You are less likely to develop low blood sugar levels if you are taking:

  • Metformin (Glucophage).
  • Pioglitazone (Actos).
  • Rosiglitazone (Avandia).
