For the original cast of Teen Mom, Catelynn Lowell, Farrah Abraham, Maci Bookout and Amber Portwood, the story has come to an end. On the other hand, these are real women whose personal stories will carry on and play out beyond the camera's view. Maybe that's why Tuesday night's season finale (after four seasons) didn’t feel like much of an ending.
Sure, when the volatile Portwood became unhinged during yet another hostile argument with baby daddy, Gary Shirley, it was some series-finale-sized drama. (Shirley lost his temper, called his baby mama a slut puppy, and swore that Portwood would never see their daughter, Leah, again. Then they made up and made cupcakes together.) But fans who have followed the media coverage also know what happened next: Portwood is currently serving a five-year prison sentence for felony drug possession. So in her case, it felt like the series ended somewhere in the middle of a downward spiral. And that's not exactly a satisfying ending.
As for Bookout, we saw her ruminate on the poor choices that led her to her life today, slogging her way through college as a single mom while fighting Ryan Edwards for custody of their son Bentley. From the beginning, Bookout has maintained her desire to get the word out to other teens about the struggles she's faced since getting pregnant at 16. In this clip from the finale, she leaves viewers with one last mention of this message. "I was young and dumb," she says, with a sigh.
Abraham made no such confession in the finale, but the cast member -- who came to be known for her contentious relationship with her mother Debra -- finished out the series on a positive note. While Debra was watching baby Sophia, Farrah made straight A's in her first quarter of culinary school. In the finale, she cried tears of joy to be reunited with her daughter.
As the show closed up shop, Lowell and Tyler Baltierra, the couple who chose to give up their baby, Carly, for adoption, seemed to be the most settled in their lives. Though Baltierra expressed some regret for giving Carly up, they both concluded that it was the right decision. Now they are married and for the time being, they appear to be the most stable of all the Teen Mom couples. Sadly, Tyler's abusive father Butch didn't fall in line to complete this attempt at an emotionally healthy family tableau. But then, if there's one thing we've learned from this show, there's no such thing as a purely happy ending.
