The competition was fierce at this year's Academy Awards -- which may be why the winners seemed even more ecstatic than usual. The show ran so long, cohost Steve Martin signed off by joking, "Avatar now takes place in the past!" So much for the producers' intent to shorten the broadcast by eliminating the "Best Song" performances (de rigeur in previous years)! Here's a quick look at winners in the major categories.
Best Picture:
The Hurt Locker
Best Director:
Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker
Best Actress in a Leading Role:
Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side
Best Actress in a Supporting Role:
Mo'Nique for Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire
Best Actor in a Leading Role:
Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart
Best Actor in a Supporting Role:
Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds
Best Animated Feature Film:
Up
Best Original Screenplay:
The Hurt Locker
Best Adaped Screenplay:

Best Original Song:
"The Weary Kind" from Crazy Heart
History was made when Bigelow took home the Best Director trophy -- a first for a female director. And despite reports that Sacha Baron Cohen was asked not to spoof Avatar during the broadcast, Ben Stiller brought the funny. The jury's still out on imminently likeable cohosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, who executed tightly-written jokes, but were arguably lacking in any bring-down-the-house comedic moments.
