This movie raises many questions: Do ghosts realize they’re dead? Do they continue on with their day-to-day lives no matter who happens to unwittingly dwell in their home? You watch this movie believing you’re watching a family living in a haunted house, yet the surprising plot twist is, (spoiler alert!), the family themselves are ghosts and don’t realize it. At one point, the main character, Grace (Nicole Kidman), finds her supposedly dead husband in the forest and brings him home. He’s distant and quiet, as though he doesn’t register who or where he is. These two types of characters could represent the difference between residual and intelligent hauntings.
