A parent’s “worst nightmare” is a phrase that gets tossed around a lot -- it conveniently sums up the terror without having to get into specifics, like the recent horrifying death of an 8-year-old boy from Brooklyn, New York.
Thousands of people turned out today to mourn Leiby Kletzky, who was kidnapped and killed on his first (yes, first) walk home alone from camp. He took a wrong turn and was abducted by a man who then murdered and dismembered him.
There are so many small leaps of faith we take as parents on a daily basis -- when your kids, say, run ahead of you on the sidewalk and forget that they’re not supposed to turn the corner alone. In the minute or so that it takes to catch up, they’re in a blind spot where you can’t protect them.
Our hearts go out to the Kletzky family today not only because of the gruesome death of their child, but also because they were just trying to make the right choice -- and a leap of faith -- as parents.
