Overnight Success

Fear and Freeway were far from box-office hits, but they were milestones in Witherspoon's budding career. In 1998, she starred in another pair of movies that only continued to up her ante in the movie industry. In the April romantic comedy Overnight Delivery, she played Ivy, a stripper who tried to help Trip (Paul Rudd) save his relationship with his girlfriend, only to have their platonic relationship bloom along the way. And in the Oscar-nominated October retro fantasy flick Pleasantville (pictured), Witherspoon once again held her own amongst a stellar cast that included Joan Allen, Jeff Daniels, William H. Macy, Tobey Maguire and Don Knotts, and earned her the Movieline Young Hollywood Award for breakthrough female performance.
