Must-Watch TV: Oxygen's 'I'm Having Their Baby' Gets It Right!

Adoptive parents can go through a harrowing emotional journey, filled with ups and downs, hopes and disappointments, excitement and fear. But what about the birth mothers of those children who are adopted? What do they go through and who tells their story?

Oxygen has the answer to that. Their new six-part docu-series, I'm Having Their Baby (which premieres tonight at 11pm EST) follows 12 women (two per episode) through their pregnancies as they make the ultimate decision to place their children for adoption. Each episode really delves into the lives of each woman, and offers an intense view into reasoning behind such a difficult choice.

As a birth mother myself, I didn't know what to expect from I'm Having Their Baby. An unexpected pregnancy surprised me back in 2010 and after much debate, I decided to place my son for adoption. I worked closely with an adoption agency in my hometown where I met with counselors, filled out paperwork and ultimately picked a family. It was the most difficult decision I've ever made.

I chose for my adoption to be an open one so that I could continue to see and have contact with my son after he was born. It's worked out beautifully. His family is like my extended family now -- we text and call each other, we make impromptu visits and send pictures and videos regularly. My son just turned two and he calls me Nay-Nay (um, so cute!) and loves to play with me. I started a blog called Letters to Little Man where I write him letters so that he will always know how much I've loved him from the beginning.

Having seen an advance screening, I can say that I'm Having Their Baby is spot-on with their portrayal of this deeply intense experience. There are so many times birth mothers ask themselves, "Should I or shouldn't I? Am I doing the right thing? Is this what's best for the baby?" and Oxygen doesn't miss a single moment of that heart-wrenching feeling.

Being torn on the decision to place your child for adoption is the hardest part of being a birth mother -- you love them so much and can hardly bear to let them go, but you feel in your heart that their best interest lies elsewhere. The show follows these moms through every back-and-forth, every moment of sadness and every moment of joy. The emotions are raw and real, and the insight it gives into the experience is one-of-a-kind. In the end, it is a beautiful experience and Oxygen displays it as nothing less. Best of all, they show that birth moms are real moms too, even though we don't have the priviledge of raising our children. The show will tug at your heartstrings, let me tell you.

Watch the trailer below and then see for yourself tonight. You can also find more on the show on the I'm Having Their Baby Facebook page or follow Oxygen on Twitter for access to exclusive content.
