Director Sam Raimi had a treat for Comic Con attendees on Thursday when he unveiled the first trailer for his new movie, Oz: The Great and Powerful.
Calling Comic Con his "home away from home," the director of the Tobey Maguire-starring Spider-Man trilogy shared the first look at his take on the man behind the curtain to the crowded Hall H at the annual San Diego convention.
The origin story of how Oz arrived at Emerald City, Oz: The Great and Powerful stars James Franco as the titular Oz (he replaced the originally cast Robert Downey Jr.), Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Abigail Spencer as witches good and evil, and Mila Kunis.
In the Wizard of Oz prequel, which starts off in black and white like the original, Franco's Oz is apparently a Midwestern illusionist. He declares: "Kansas is full of good men. I don't want to be a good man. I want to be a great one," and like Dorothy, ends up whisked away during a tornado.
When he lands, he's in a world of colorful wonder, where characters like Williams' lovely Glinda ask "Are you the great man we've been waiting for?" before we see a glimpse of those frighteningly familiar flying monkeys.
Oz: The Great and Powerful, Raimi's first film since his 2009's horror flick Drag Me to Hell, hits theaters on March 13, 2013.
