Pantone's 2014 Color of the Year Is Radiant Orchid

The purple shade is said to symbolize creativity and originality

While many of us are consumed this time of year with the colors red and green – and maybe a little winter white (or slushy gray) thrown in for good measure, Pantone is thinking ahead to 2014, with the announcement of its color for the new year: Radiant Orchid.

Or, as we like to call it, purple.

Also referred to as Pantone 18-3224, the royal hue takes the reigns from this year’s color of the year, Emerald, and, while the green shade symbolized grown, renewal and prosperity, Radiant Orchid is about creativity and originality, according to the global authority on color.

“An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health,” Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, says in a release. “It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.”

The color was all over spring 2014 runways, featured by labels like Juicy Couture and Yoana Baraschi, and has already been spotted on red carpets in recent months – Eva Longoria sparkled in it at the Critics’ Choice awards in January, Jennifer Garner wore it to the Oscars in February, Carrie Underwood donned it to the Emmys in September).

According to Pantone, Radiant Orchid lipsticks and blushes look good on all skin tones, flatter all hair and eye colors, too, and look fab paired with similar shades of lavender, pink and purple. As for décor, the color complements deep hunter greens, teal, turquoise, olive, light yellows, gray, beige and taupe.

Sounds pretty radiant to us. But, just for the record, we're going to go ahead and call it "purple," OK?
