Katy Perry knows how to keep us guessing. Three weeks after unveiling a surprisingly glamorous image on the cover of Interview magazine, the pop star has washed off her makeup and put on combat fatigues for her newest music video. In "Part of Me," which premiered Wednesday night on MTV, the singer plays a jilted girlfriend who decides to move on... by joining the Marines. Watch below!
When Perry premiered the song "Part of Me" at this year's Grammy Awards, it was rumored to be about her breakup with Russell Brand -- which she has denied.
"I wrote it two years ago, which is funny because everybody is like, 'God, it sounds so current,'" she told MTV News.
Maybe that's why the guy in the video is as far away from Russell as you can get: a blond, buttoned-up businessman who's cheating with a fellow cubicle dweller. When video-Katy catches not-Russell in the act, she drives off in tears. Then at a gas station, she sees an ad that says "All women are created equal, then some become Marines." Immediately, she runs into the bathroom, chops off her hair and tapes down her breasts. (FYI, we're pretty sure that the Marines just let you wear a bra.)
After she signs up, video-Katy goes through basic training and then is immediately deployed to the Middle East. At the end, when she receives a letter from her ex-boyfriend begging her to come back, she takes out a military-issue lighter and burns it. Semper Fi, cheater!
The best thing about the video? Perry actually went through boot-camp training alongside real-life soldiers, becoming a "wannabe Marine" for three days.
"This is one of the most aggressive videos I've ever done," she told MTV. "It's an affirmation of strength, so I wanted to go the strongest route I could."
And although the new video features no gummy bears or cotton candy, Perry did manage to find something delicious on set: the MRE (that's meal ready to eat) rations.
"They tasted like a McRib!" Perry swears.
"Part of Me" will appear on Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, which hits stores next week.
