Partying While Pregnant: Is It All Good, Clean Fun?

Who says you have to skip the bars when you're expecting? (Just skip the alcohol!)

When I was seven months pregnant, I went to see Nine Inch Nails play live. My big black-clad belly got a lot of stares, and a few people even had the nerve to tell me I shouldn’t be there. Sorry, but the barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen cliché went out of style about four decades ago. These days, moms-to-be just wanna have fun, too, and you can find them dancing at clubs, singing at the top of their lungs at concerts (far away from the mosh pit, of course) and hanging out at happy hour.

I’m certainly not suggesting that expecting mothers should knock back shots -- although there are those who insist light drinking during pregnancy really isn’t a big deal. However, I am all for going out and having a good time with friends, especially since that’s harder to do once baby arrives. Here are some more ways mamas we know enjoyed their pregnant nights out:

“When I was almost nine months pregnant, I went to a club with friends and got up on stage and did ‘60s-style go-go dancing. Just going out and being with my friends was important to me. Plus, for nine months I was their designated driver.” -- Dot

“My son was still in utero when I first took him to a sports bar to see my alma mater play basketball. Now he’s in kindergarten and he still goes with me so we can cheer the team on.” -- Debbie

“When I was pregnant, I used to challenge the bartenders to make me creative nonalcoholic cocktails, and they came up with some really amazing drinks. The best was something with cucumber and fruit juice.” -- Heather

“I went to bars while pregnant and I got looks like you wouldn't believe. Of course I was drinking cranberry juice with seltzer. One time I told someone I was going to a Beastie Boys concert and he warned me I might make the baby deaf! But I didn’t let ignorance stop me.” -- Stacy

“I sat down at a swanky bar with my husband, and the bartender immediately offered me a virgin Mojito. ‘It’s your night out, too,’ she told me. It tasted exactly like a Mojito and was just as fun to hold and sip.” -- Yael

“When I was pregnant, I hit a bar and asked for something fruity, beautiful and nonalcoholic. The bartender gave me a huge virgin Madras with lots of oranges and cherries -- for free! Must have been my belly.” --Alexia
