Fans of Paula Abdul (we know you're out there!) devastated by the idea of Paula-free TV, tonight's your night. The recently departed American Idol judge is taking center stage tonight as the host (and possibly more!) of Vh1 Divas.
The concert-show – which will have Paula's fellow American Idol alumni Kelly Clarkson and Jordin Sparks among its performers – is the resurrection of Vh1's annual tribute to all things musical and female.
The lineup for this year's Vh1 Divas skews younger than the Divas events of the past: Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, Adele and Leona Lewis will also be performing tonight (along with the aforementioned American Idol gals). A few of the (relatively) old guard will be on hand, too: Vh1 says Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge, Cyndi Lauper and Martina McBride will be "special musical guests" tonight. Kathy Griffin, Toni Braxton, Ryan Kwanten, Lauren Conrad, Whitney Port and the cast of Fame will be on hand to present awards.
In its original run, from the years of 1998 to 2004, the all-female gala featured memorable moments from the likes of Ellen DeGeneres, LeAnn Rimes, Mariah Carey, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Cher, Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, Whitney Houston, Beyonce and Chaka Khan. (Some of which are available for your viewing pleasure at Vh1.com.)
The show isn't just a place to celebrate women and their amazing voices (not that there's anything wrong with doing just that!). It's also a benefit for the VH1 Save The Music Foundation, which works to keep music education alive in public schools.
Vh1 Divas is airing live tonight from the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Show starts at 9 p.m. (8 p.m. Central).
