Pedestrian Safety

Make sure your kids know these rules by heart:

  • Cross the street at corners or crosswalks and obey all traffic signals. Don't assume that because you can see the driver, the driver can see you. Try to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them. Look left, right and left again before you cross, and keep looking both ways until you reach the other side of the street. Walk, don't run.

  • Walk on sidewalks or paths. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the street, facing oncoming traffic. Take direct routes with the fewest street crossings.

  • Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.
