VIDEO: Penelope Cruz Dishes on Doing 'Pirates' Stunts While Pregnant

The new mom, who learned she was expecting during filming, talks to iVillage about playing it safe while sword-slinging

When she's not busy promoting her highly anticipated film, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (in theaters May 20), Penelope Cruz is enjoying being a new mom. The private star recently opened up to Vogue  about the overwhelming amount of love she felt after giving birth to baby Leonardo (her son with husband Javier Bardem) back in January.

But the Oscar winner, 37, didn't find out she was pregnant until she'd signed on to play a sword-slinging pirate in the buzzworthy action film. Luckily, Cruz was able to continue on in the role -- even if she did have to ease off some of the more dangerous stunts.

"I did everything that was safe, and I was really protected by (director) Rob (Marshall) and Johnny (Depp) and (producer) Jerry (Bruckheimer) and everyone," the actress tells iVillage exclusively. "We had doubles for all the things that were dangerous -- women that are really great with the sword and really professional and had done that for years and years in their lives."
