By now, the world knows that Mel Gibson is easily provoked into a state of N-word-spewing outrage. But is his behavior provoking sheer outrage in moviegoers and celeb watchers? It turns out that not everyone sees the star's PR crisis in, excuse the pun, black and white.
On Monday, The View cohost Whoopi Goldberg seemed eager to explain that her friend is not a racist in her experience; on Tuesday's broadcast, Goldberg continued to bristle at the suggestion that Gibson was downright despicable, instead expressing irritation over why the recordings were leaked and questioning the motives of his girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva.
The disturbing audio recordings (including a new one released Tuesday by RadarOnline.com) of the Oscar winner as he relentlessly hurls threatening, virtriolic slurs at the mother of his baby daughter depict just what a raging, unhinged person this famous movie star actually is. As Grigorieva can be heard replying during one clip, "You need medication!"
But Goldberg isn't alone in her urge to find excuses for Gibson. Some commenters in the blogosphere seem to be pointing the finger at what Gibson's ex did, or said, or angled for, or lied about, or triggered to spark meltdowns in the actor. An anonymous friend of the actor has now told People that Gibson sought therapy over the "unhealthy" relationship because "he was getting his buttons pushed."
Isn't questioning Grigorieva's role here a distraction? Isn't it actually beside the point? Is there actually a gray area people are seeking where the racist, violent, terrifying language caught on tape is justified? The man admits to physical abuse and threatens murder. "I'll put you in a [expletive] rose garden," he rants on one recording. "You understand that? Because I'm capable of it."
Certainly, many are curious about the larger issues in the relationship that would lead a woman to try to capture her boyfriend's blowups on tape. But doesn't it make sense that, without any evidence, she might have been afraid that no one would believe her claims of abuse against the movie star?
The tapes expose a ferociously angry, appallingly racist person. They're indefensible. Aren't they?
