Would You Throw a "Period Party" for Your Daughter?

The way we talk about getting your period seems to be changing -- and that could be great news for adolescent girls

Getting your period has always been regarded as a woman’s curse -- a monthly hassle that leaves you running for the ladies room at the most inopportune moments. But what if we celebrated rather than whispered about getting our period -- and then passed that enthusiasm down to our daughters? After all, what’s more I-am-woman-hear-me-roar than your body demonstrating that it’s capable of growing a life?

The groundbreaking Hello Flo commercial about girls being totally psyched about “The Red Badge of Courage” has already started to change the conversation. Now the ladies behind The Period Store, an online shop that ships what’s basically a time-of-the-month care package that’s sent to you when Aunt Flo’s set to arrive (similar to the service from Hello Flo), recently threw a “Menstruation Celebration,” complete with -- you guessed it -- red velvet cupcakes, tampon roses, uterus cookies and red lollipops. Sure, there’s an ick factor but maybe that’s just society discomfort with feminine issues talking.

This was a super-chic launch party for a business, but it got us thinking: what if we made a similar to-do about a girl getting her first period? It would set the tone to talk about periods openly and with a bit of humor, and would let her know it’s awesome (and not embarrassing) to get a monthly sign that all the lady parts are in working order.

What do you think -- would you ever do it?
