Opponents of Donald Trump's political rants are trying hit him where it hurts: in the wallet. Half a million people (and counting!) have signed a new online petition urging Macy's to cut all ties with Trump, who's currently a paid spokesperson for the department store chain (which also carries his menswear line).
"Donald Trump does not reflect the 'magic of Macy's,'" the petition declares. "We urge you to sever ties with him. Macy's says it has a strong obligation to be 'socially responsible' and that 'actions speak louder than words.' Indeed. It's time to act." The document's author goes on to cite several examples of Trump's offensive actions, including his support of the "birther" movement, his denial of climate change and a history of "sexist behavior."
At the moment, the petition has a little over 504,000 signatures; their goal is to reach 525,000. And along the way, they've found a surprising advocate: Cher.
"Ill NEVER GO TO MACY’S AGAIN ! I didnt know they sold Donald Trump’s Line!" the pop icon tweeted on Sunday. "If they don’t care that they sell products from a LOUDMOUTH RACIST CRETIN, WHO’D LIE LIKE 'HIS RUG' TO GET SOME CHEAP PRESS! I CANT BELIEVE MACY’S THINKS HE’S THE RIGHT 'MAN' 2 REPRESENT THEIR NAME!"
While Trump has not responded to the petition itself, he did take a moment out of his busy schedule to personally insult Cher. "@cher should spend more time focusing on her family and dying career!" Trump tweeted on Tuesday. "I don’t wear a 'rug' -- it’s mine. And I promise not to talk about your massive plastic surgeries that didn’t work. It’s amazing how people can talk about me but I’m not allowed to talk about them."
Wait a minute -- Trump thinks he "isn't allowed" to speak his mind? Could have fooled us! For the entire election season, the Celebrity Apprentice host has been running off at the mouth about his hatred for President Obama. His ranting came to a head on election night, when Trump tweeted that Obama's win was "phoney" and encouraged citizens to start "a revolution in this country." (Most of those embarrassing tweets have since been deleted.)
And between tirades about Obama, Trump found the time to declare that Robert Pattinson shouldn't have given Kristen Stewart another chance. This is a guy who's incapable of keeping his opinions to himself and incapable of being civil towards anyone who dares to disagree with him. Is it any wonder that half a million people are campaigning for him to go away?
For now, Trump doesn't appear to feel threatened by the internet campaign. A spokesperson for the mogul told the NY Daily News that "Mr. Trump is important to Macy’s, both as a brand and as an endorser. His ties, shirts, cufflinks, fragrances and other merchandise are top-selling items across the country -- in particular Mr. Trump’s ties are the number one selling ties at Macy’s."
So if you really want Macy's to "dump Trump," don't get your dad one of his ties for Christmas!
