If people weren't already noticing Madonna after her self-titled debut album dropped in October 1982, she would soon become a household name. "Everything following that was like, 'Oh my God! What's happening to my life?' she told People. "You get caught up in that." Months later, the 26-year-old -- dressed as a bride and wearing a "Boy Toy" belt buckle -- stole the show at the first MTV Video Music Awards with her performance of "Like a Virgin." After descending from a giant wedding cake, the star crawled and writhed across the stage, although she has since admitted that she never really intended to give the audience a peak at the lacy undergarments beneath her dress. "I did a stage dive, my dress went up, everyone saw my underpants, scandal, scandal, scandal," she said on Nightline in January. "My manager told me that my career was over with. And he was wrong."
