Pink has never fit the mold of a pop princess, and she knows it. In a new cover story for Redbook, the three-time Grammy winner (and new mom) talks about the challenges of being a "butch" woman in an industry full of J. Los and Britneys.
"Well, I was always considered butch," says the singer, when asked what makes her feel beautiful. "Feeling beautiful to me is when I feel good in my leather pants and my husband (motorcycle racer Carey Hart) grabs my ass. Or when I'm sitting on a mat and my daughter (Willow, 1) runs to me with complete joy."
"Beautiful has never been my goal," she adds. "Joy is my goal -- to feel healthy and strong and powerful and useful and engaged and intelligent and in love. It’s about joy. And there's such joy now."
How is Pink about to focus on joy when the whole entertainment industry is focused on beauty? Maybe it's because the "Try" singer never relied on her looks to begin with. (Though her face isn't anything to complain about, seeing as it's currently selling Cover Girl cosmetics.)
"'A girl like me' is someone who doesn't rest on her looks, who has had people tell me from day one, 'You're never going to get magazine covers because you're not pretty enough,'" Pink tells the magazine (of which she is, naturally, on the cover). "I'm totally comfortable with that. I know my strong points: I work hard, I have talent, I'm funny, and I'm a good person."
It's pretty incredible how Pink manages to seem so down-to-earth and real, even after we've seen her perform an underwater trapeze act at the Grammys. Sure, her life is over-the-top, but she seems to really be living it, not checking off a list of famous-person requirements. (Hot husband? Check. Cute baby? Check. Great body? Check.)
To wit, in the Redbook interview, Pink describes a night with her fussy newborn as the moment that her "whole life made sense, for the first time ever." She also describes the dramatic (some might say "crazy") way she lured her husband back after a period of separation.
"I had made him a photo album of all the cards he had ever given me, of all the photos of our entire relationship," she recalled. "I spent months on this album. On the last page, I pasted a photo of me from a really bad movie I made years ago with my neck slit and blood everywhere. Next to it I wrote, 'This is me without you.' On the next page, there was a picture of a baby. And I wrote: 'The rest is unwritten.' The divorce papers that we never signed were behind that page. I was like, 'The rest is up to you.' And I did all of this in his favorite bra and panties."
Probably not a strategy most of us would try, but it's funny, smart, heartfelt and outside of the box -- in other words, Pink to the core.
