Caring for a Cast

Keep the cast dry so it doesn’t break. To reduce swelling, have your child prop the injured area on a pillow the first few days. For baths or showers, wrap the cast in plastic wrap and then cover with a plastic bag secured in place with duct tape. “It’s also easier to bathe if you have your child sit on a plastic outdoor chair placed in the shower or tub,” says Sacchetti. If the area gets itchy, wiggle the cast a little or blow cool air from a hair dryer into the cast. Avoid poking items into the cast to scratch an itch, it could damage the skin and cause an infection. Don't sprinkle in talcum powder, either, which can get gummy and smelly. If there’s tingling, numbness, increasing pain or odors coming from inside the cast, call your doctor.
