Sex education will be taught in all New York City Schools beginning in 2012, Chancellor Dennis Walcott announced last August. In an email to middle school and high school principals, Walcott wrote: “We have students who are having sex before the age of 13; students who have had multiple sexual partners; and students who aren't protecting themselves against sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS.” While your child may be getting sex education in school -- or will soon -- several studies show that kids would rather learn about sex from their parents, says Claire Brindis, an adolescent health expert at the University of California San Francisco.
