Little kids are happy with simple games -- and we're not talking about the ones downloaded onto your smartphone (although that's not a bad idea either): How many red things does he see at the grocery store? What would he get grandma if he were one of Santa's elves? Older kids like to feel they're a part of the larger picture. "Engage them," says Patty Dow, a parent educator and coach. "Ask older kids their opinions and let them make some gift decisions. They want your attention just like young ones do." As often as you can, reward your kid with high-spirited attention -- kisses, high fives. It's important that she doesn't feel as though you're simply going through the motions.
