Your Areolas: Bigger Than Ever

Bigger, darker and forever changed: That is the new state of your areolas. (You can thank rising estrogen levels for that.) The skin around your nipples thickens during pregnancy and your areolas get larger and darker, says Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., a clinical professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at Yale University School of Medicine. Some experts theorize that the former change makes nursing less painful and the latter helps your newborn find her way to food. (Babies have blurry vision and the prominent difference in areola color may help her see it.)
