Potty training: It's a celebration!

Celebrate your child's successes -- even the small ones. Tell your little one how happy you are that they told you before they needed to use the potty. Or reward their efforts -- keep a surprise jar with safe trinkets and let them select an item each time they use the potty.

You can also welcome your child into the world of growing up by taking him or her out for a special treat. Take your child to a movie, or go out to a restaurant or go shopping together (and buy some big kid pants). Let your child know these steps open up a whole world of new possibilities. (But you might not want to mention day care or preschool in the same breath.) Growing up does have its advantages.

If it looks like you have seen the last of diapers, it may be time for a little ceremony to dispose of your child's remaining diapers. Make it a family party, with cake, ice cream and streamers. Your child may remember this special celebration and carry on this tradition with his or her own kids!
