There's no question that the breakout star of 2009 is Gabourey Sidibe, star of the new indie movie Precious. Audiences have been blown away by the 26-year-old's devastating performance as an abused, poverty-stricken teenager who rises above her circumstances. And women are cheering the plus-sized beauty's rise to stardom, not to mention the wit and charisma she's shown in interviews. Of course, the sad reality is that there aren't a lot of starring Hollywood roles for women who look like Sidibe. So we were wondering: besides collecting an Oscar nomination for Precious (fingers crossed!), what's Gabby up to next?
Turns out we shouldn't have been worried. Sidibe is already shooting another indie movie: Yelling to the Sky, with rumored co-stars Don Cheadle and Zoe Kravitz. The best part, the actress told Roger Ebert, is that her new character is the polar opposite of Precious:
"She's the queen of the school, she's a bad girl, she makes out with her boyfriend and she drinks."
Sidibe actually feels she's much closer in real-life to this character than the one that put her on the map, telling Ebert: "I kind of was Miss Popularity back in junior high, except Hollywood would never peg me as Miss Popularity, so I guess I'm playing against type."
The actress is also weighing TV offers, like a guest role in the new Showtime series The C Word, starring Laura Linney as a teacher with terminal cancer. Unfortunately, this role sounds a little more representative of how Hollywood casts plus-sized black actresses; according to Variety, Sidibe would play "a teen whom Linney's character tries to help lose both weight and the bad attitude."
