Properly-trained midwives have all of the knowledge needed to care for normal mothers and babies and to identify and anticipate deviations from normal. Make sure your midwife is certified or licensed and a graduate of an accredited program of study. You should also get references and find out if she or he has admitting privileges at a hospital. What consultant does she use and what happens in the event of an emergency? Ask around and ask for references.
