Pregnancy Symptoms: Showing at Only Six Weeks?

I am six weeks pregnant, and all of a sudden my tummy popped out. Although I haven't gained weight, my stomach has grown seven inches! This is my second pregnancy. Could I be "showing" so soon?

"Showing" almost always begins sooner with a second baby than it does with the first. The muscles of the abdomen are a bit more lax, and the uterus tends to fall forward a bit more easily because of the relaxation of the supporting ligaments.

At six weeks, the uterus is still in the pelvic cavity but it is taking up space and the abdominal organs are displaced upward as the uterus gets larger. In fairly thin women, it is much more noticeable. Even a full bladder or a large meal can change the abdominal contour.

Having remarked on how normal this is, I should, however, mention that a uterus that grows larger than expected may point to the possibility of a multiple pregnancy. In rare cases, a rapidly growing uterus could be a sign of a molar pregnancy or a tumor. Although I don't think this is the case, it would be a good idea to have a pelvic exam so that an experienced midwife or doctor can assess your uterine size to see if it corresponds to your dates.
