Hi iVillagers!
Welcome to the very first installment of my weekly blog for iVillage Parenting! I'm going to be talking to you every week after the show so if there's something specific you'd like me to address -- chime in below! First up, baby names. They're quite understandably a hot topic in my line of business -- and a hot topic for any mum who's expecting. Choosing your baby’s name can be one of the most exciting decisions you make during your pregnancy, but it can also be loaded with drama, indecision and passion. (If you saw the first episode of my show Pregnant in Heels, on Bravo, you know what I'm talking about!). Here are some other trends I'm seeing in the world of baby names:
Google It
Today's tech-savvy mums and dads are scrambling to register email accounts, domain names and Facebook pages for their unborn bundles of joy as part of their quest for the latest and greatest baby names. I have clients who will actually reject a name they love if the online domain is already taken!
Go Old Fashioned
For a long time, people were trying to find new and unique names, even making them up completely. But these days, I'm seeing the trend turn to traditional and old fashioned names, even positively antique names, as if each is being picked for a future presidential candidate, CEO or Nobel Prize winner. I absolutely love the movement away from modern, wild and wacky (Willy Boo, no thank you!) and toward old fashioned -- even a little eccentric. (Balthazar, Charles, Victoria and Blue-Belle just to name a few.) I have a very personal connection to this trend, as I named my son Wellington -- we call him Wells for short!
Keep It To Yourself
Whatever baby name you've chosen, try not to share it with anyone unless you're prepared to deal with their possibly negative reaction. Even good friends and family members can have a hard time keeping their faces neutral when they hear (and hate) the name you love and have settled upon. If the name has become sentimental to you, that rude reaction can be even more crushing. So keep the name a surprise -- and most importantly, make sure it means something special to you.
