Pressed Cookies

A cookie press forces dough through various templates to make decorative shapes, and cookie molds are pressed against a ball of dough to imprint a design on each cookie. But you don’t need special equipment to press designs into cookies.

Cut holly leaf shapes with a cutter or the tip of a knife out of green-tinted dough, and use a toothpick or skewer to press lines like leaf veins into the surface. Here, we cut angel shapes with a cookie cutter, and then pressed the tip of a paring knife in even rows along the surface for a triangular pattern that’s set into greater relief by a sprinkle of sanding sugar. The knife tip technique also works beautifully when pressed into Christmas tree shapes.
