Project Runway Recap: Finale Part 1

As we all know, the clock is ticking down to Fashion Week in Bryant Park. Last week was quite a turn of events when the judges decided to give Rami and Chris both a shot at Fashion week. They were instructed to create a line, but only show their three top designs. They would be judged on those three designs, and the judges would then make a decision based on the top three outfits.

"You will be showing to the largest and most influential in the industry- the world will be watching," Tim warned the designers about Fashion Week. This was no joke. Tim traveled around America to each designer's abode in order to see how far they'd come with their collections. First stop: Christian.

"I'm 21 years old - that's fierce," Christian bragged before Tim came into his awfully tiny New York City apartment.

Christian's look was a romantic gothic kind of look, and he strived to make every piece a really strong look. Though Christian was clearly proud of his collection, Tim was fairly indifferent.

Especially when Christian whipped out his final piece, Tim’s face looked like he had just looked at a dying cat. He hesitated, and said “Christian, you need to ask yourself ‘when do I not need something?’” He added, “you need to bring an editing eye to everything you’re making. An editing eye.” Looks like Christian’s feathered pants weren’t going to fly.

Next stop: Jillian.

Jillian informed us that after the show was over, she didn’t go back to her job at Ralph Lauren. She focused on her collection, instead.

Jillian was incredibly inspired by the previous challenge- taking an era of art and creating a design from it. Therefore, she decided to research 15th century armor and base her collection of that.

Tim reviewed her collection and told her it seemed a bit like a cloudy day and he just doesn’t “get it.” Jillian says that “I want the whole world to know who I am and to seek out the clothing I design.”

After he critiques her collection, Tim takes a trip with Jillian to visit her family in Long Island.

Next stop: Rami

Rami gives us a little bit of his background, including his mother winning Miss Jordan when he was little, and then unfortunately passing away when he was just five years old. Rami’s inspiration to his collection was Joan of Arc.

“It's a combination f construction and detail that resembles the fighting gear that she used at the time,” he explained.

Tim liked his collection, but gave him some advice and tid bits about things he should change.

“Whatever is meant to happen will happen,” Rami said after Tim left.

Next stop: Chris

Chris’s background in fashion was derived from a passion of dragging. He won a contest, and decided he wanted to make a life out of designing clothing.

Chris’s inspiration was beauty with a quirk- “95% fashion and 5% costume thrown in,” he told Tim.

Tim loved it, said it was beautiful. But then the human hair came into play.

Chris used real hair extensions for two of his pieces- and he was proud of it. Tim, however, felt quite differently.

He told Chris that when people see his human hair pieces, it’s like walking into a monkey house- it stinks. Tim really knows how to brighten someone’s day up, that’s for sure.

After Tim saw everyone’s collection, the designers all go back to the showroom and reunite for Rami and Chris’s final moment.

Because Jillian and Christian are immune, they helped Chris and Rami get their models dressed and prep for each designer’s make or break moment.

After Chris and Rami’s six pieces walked down the runway, they were judged, per usual. "You thought outside of the box," Kors said to Chris about human- haired skirt and jacket.

Nina Garcia liked his collection, but she thought it went a little bit overboard.

Rami’s three pieces were praised more highly. The judges thought it looked effortless.

Although, Nina was a little worried about Rami’s coat- but hey, has she ever liked anybody’s stuff? Heidi complimented Rami by telling him she would definitely wear the evening dress he created.

Overall, the judges concluded that both collections were dark, overly designed and very complicated. Looks like they tried a little bit too hard and dressed to impress.

Ultimately, they chose Rami to continue onto Fashion Week. Though Chris was asked to pack his things and go home, he told Heidi he had an incredible experience.
