Like apples, clementines or asparagus, there is really only one time of year when the Pumpkin Spice Latte is in our lives. Along with pumpkin bread, pumpkin beer, pumpkin pie and pumpkin scones, fall is when we indulge in all things pumpkin.
Usually, in real life, I’m a black coffee drinker. I’m not a big milk fan and I like my coffee strong, so we make it at home every morning in our siphon coffee maker. I rarely go out for coffee which makes fall, and treating myself to pumpkin spice lattes, a big deal. And since I’d rather spend $4 on fancy cheese or a croissant than coffee, I decided to try my hand at making one. In the same amount of time it took for my (turquoise) nail polish to dry, I had made a delicious, pumpkin-tastic treat.
Pumpkin Spice Latte
1 cup milk
1/2 cup espresso or 1 cup strong coffee
1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
3 tablespoons pumpkin puree
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
2 tablespoons sugar
In a pot over medium heat, combine milk, pumpkin, sugar, cocoa and spice. Heat, stirring occasionally. Add coffee. Using an immersion blender, blend until frothy (or, whisk until frothy.) Serve.
