Your child will love parroting the pirate-speak that comes with this costume. "Aaarrghs" and "shiver me timbers" are par for the course with this easy-to-make get-up!
Take an old pair of black jeans (or sweatpants) and cut off just below the knee, leaving jagged points. Cut sleeve edges and bottom of a striped shirt (any colors will do, but red and white are more authentic & colorful) into similar jagged points. Cut a few holes in the shirt, and if it's chilly, layer it over a sweatshirt for added warmth. Add colorful strips of scrap fabric for a sash. Stick a plastic sword in the belt -- or cut one out of cardboard & cover with foil).
Accessorize with homemade or storebought items: an eyepatch (made with black felt and elastic), a red bandana, clip-on gold hoop earring, and more. With eyeliner or face paint, paint your child's face with dark eyebrows, a mustache, a dotted-on gray, unshaven look, and a red scar or two.
