What's the future of certain boys living in a fatherless home? Pretty bright for the lives of these seven successful men who were

We hear so much negativity about boys raised outside of the traditional two-parent home that rarely do we notice those individuals who turned out quite heroic in spite of growing up in an unconventional family. Following are some brief bios on seven men who made it to the top. We hope this will be just be the beginning of many more "success stories" that will run in future issues. Whether the achievements or philosophies of these men agree with us or not, we have to admit, they carved out successful futures for themselves.

Alexander Haig, Jr. (Former White House Chief of Staff and Secretary of State)

It's been said of Alexander Haig that he has perhaps been closer to the reins of presidential authority in the United States than any other person not elected to public office. Although Haig has been labeled by some a hard line right winger, those who know him say he is more moderate, pragmatic and not so rigid In the conclusion of his book Caveat, he states, "military power and economic strength are important, but they are not everything. Americans will support a foreign policy that demands a world of peaceful change, the defense of human values, the liberation of human genius and the-advancement of social justice."

Bom on December 2, 1924, in a Philadelphia suburb, he had to help his mother make ends meet when he was only ten years old. His father had just died leaving his wife to struggle to pay the bills. Young Haig helped by delivering newspapers, and later on he worked for the post office. He's also had jobs at a refinery and as a store floorwalker. His pivotal career move came in 1969 when, already a key man in Washington, he was promoted to brigadier general. In 1981, Haig was sworn in as the fifty-ninth US Secretary of State.

In spite of some of his early family difficulties, Alexander Haig reflects back upon on his boyhood as having been typical and normal.
