Tom Cruise, (Actor)
Thomas Cruise Mapother 4th was born on July 3, 1962. When he was a child, he felt singled out- different from the other kids, not so much because his parents divorced, but primarily because he suffered from dyslexia To compensate for being placed in special remedial classes coupled with frequent moving and difficulty malting new friends, Cruise fully threw himself into sports.
His parents divorced around the time he was eleven. Cruise's mother took her four children to her hometown, Louisville, KY where for five years she stabled to support them. She took a variety of jobs including selling appliances and working as a hostess at electronics conventions. According to a Rolling Stone magazine interview in 1986, the Mapothers wrote poems and read them to each other as gifts one Christmas when they were unable to afford any other kind of present.
Although he felt a desperate need to belong, he sidestepped his new friends and acquaintances, in Louisville, fearing they would never understand his own special kind of childhood. "Alter a divorce, you feel so vulnerable," Cruise remarked in the same interview. But his real problem was feeling that no one could relate to his learning disabilities. "Well get through this," he told his sisters who like himself, also suffered from dyslexia besides experiencing the divorce and subsequent move.
At the age of fourteen, in his search for what he believed would be a more Structured environment, Cruise enrolled at a Franciscan seminary in Cincinnati with thoughts of becoming a priest. But after one year he left after admitting to himself that he "loved women too much to give that up."
Today he boasts a stream of movie credits as one of the most successful and highest paid actors in Hollywood.
