The cameras never stopped rolling as Jon and Kate’s marriage went up in flames. Following hot on the Gosselins’ heels are the reality “stars” of Raising Sextuplets Bryan and Jennifer Masche. RadarOnline reports that Jennifer filed for separation after Bryan was charged with disorderly conduct, threats of domestic violence and resisting arrest. Whoa!
Back when the Gosselins split, Kate was quoted as saying, "Parents of multiples have triple the divorce rate." And seeing this happen to the Masche's made me wonder if Kate's stat was for real. So I did some research. What did I find? Nada. Some research suggests that parents of multiples might be less happy -- others claim that the more children people have the happier they report being. Who's right? I don't know!
It’s possible that having six or eight kids under the age of ten is enough to send anybody over the edge, but (admittedly, as an outsider looking in) I can't blame these breakups on family size. Like the Gosselins before them, the Masches vowed to stay grounded and focused on their kids, despite that whole TV show thing. And things were going relatively well until Bryan apparently got really pissed off, shouted profanities at his wife and threatened to “flatten” his father-in-law. Maybe if the Masches weren’t (relatively) famous, the incident would have been a nonevent and the couple would have trotted along on their mostly-merry way. Perhaps getting a tiny taste of fame makes these couples think they are beyond reproach. Maybe, just maybe, Hollywood isn’t offering the best role models these days. (What would Mel Gibson Do?) I'm thinking that the Gosselins and the Masches are hapless victims of reality TV stardom.
Having children is challenging. Raising them is even harder. Trying to do it all -- and stay sane and happily married -- under constant public scrutiny (even if you willingly signed up to be in the spotlight) appears to be close to impossible.
Do you think having multiples puts a couple at higher risk of divorce? Chime in below!
