Country star Randy Travis posed for a mug shot on Monday morning after being arrested for public intoxication in Sanger, Texas. Travis, 52, was found drinking wine straight from the bottle in the wee hours of the morning, while sitting in a parked car in front of a Baptist church.
According to the arresting officer, who didn't realize at first who the man in the car was, Travis smelled strongly of alcohol and was slurring his speech when he spoke. The singer reportedly told the officer that he'd had an argument with his girlfriend and was trying to get home to Tioga, about 20 miles away.
"Mr. Travis was unaware of his location and kept asking me to take him home," said the police officer, who booked Travis into the county jail at 1:30 a.m.
After being given a few hours to "sober up," Travis was released. In a statement given to the press on Monday morning, Travis said he is sorry "for what resulted following an evening of celebrating the Super Bowl."
"I'm committed to being responsible and accountable, and apologize for my actions," said the singer.
Though he has had few legal problems as an adult, Travis has said that he started drinking when he was 12 years old. Last year, he alarmed fans by collapsing onstage in the middle of a song. His publicist attributed the incident to over-the-counter allergy medications.
A six-time Grammy winner, Randy Travis has had 22 No. 1 country hits since the 1980s, including "Three Wooden Crosses" and "Honky Tonk Moon." In the past two decades, he has also pursued an acting career, with frequent TV guest appearances on shows including Touched by an Angel and King of the Hill.
