The Rash of Bullying Suicides

The year began with the horrifying tale of Phoebe Prince, a 15-year-old student from Massachusetts who hanged herself, allegedly because she was repeatedly bullied. The year closed out the way it began, with a string of bullying-related suicides, many involving gay teens. Celebrities from Ellen DeGeneres to Neil Patrick Harris mounted anti-bullying campaigns while schools nationwide started programs. Said Valerie Rowekamp, an iVoice on iVillage, "It makes my heart hurt to think about what kind of pain and inner turmoil people endure when they are taunted and teased for merely being themselves. I really hope that 2011 brings more awareness and mutual respect to all."
