Reading Out Loud to Kids

You already know about the studies and statistics that show how important it is to read to your child. But don't let all that serious talk fool you. Reading with your kids can be a hoot! "What matters most is that you're together, sharing special time with words and images," says Francie Alexander, vice president and chief academic officer at Scholastic. There are probably as many ways to bond with your baby over books as there are old Cheerios on your kitchen floor, so relax. Get your silly on and enjoy!

Get Up Close and Personal
Reading together gives your child a chance to have your undivided attention. The more affectionate and intimate you make the experience, the more your child will cherish it. Not all children will nestle in your lap. Some prefer stories during bath time or bedside stories. Just the sound of your voice and eye contact go a long way toward a great reading experience.

Give Them a Daily Dose
Even if for only a few minutes, reading should be an everyday thing. Children develop a love of reading when they realize reading is important to you and they can look forward to enjoying this time with you regularly. Making it a ritual also will help you get a better understanding of the books and subjects they like most.

Turn up the Volume
Swoosh like the leaves. Chirp like a bird. Whistle like the wind. This is no time to keep your voice down. Kids love sound effects. Don't get all George Lucas on them, but do pump it up to keep things exciting. Need some further inspiration?
