Who says being a girl is all about pink and princesses? For this outgoing 7 year old, her rock star birthday party was the ultimate chance to channel her inner Taylor Swift. Turn up the amp and invite the neighborhood!
iVillage's editorial director Liz Zack threw this rocking bash for her daughter Sofia's 7th birthday. From crazy karaoke sessions to guitar-shaped cakes, we'll show you how you can do it, too! (Check out the superhero party she threw for son Lucca, too!)
Liz ZackFirst on Sofia's to-do list? Making sure she looked the part! Mom found awesome colorful hair extensions for all of the partygoers on Amazon and rockin' fishnet gloves at the party store (her favorite part of the ensemble, and ours too!). So cute and inexpensive. She found the rock start shirt at Target. (Sofia got to pick from between a few options pre-selected by mom so she felt completely in charge of her outfit -- super important for precocious 7 year olds.)
Liz ZackGuests got to design their own guitar so they could get their rock star on. It's a super cute (and cheap) way to get everyone involved. Mom bought these premade cardboard cut outs in bulk from Oriental Trading Co. Then she gathered up an arsenal of art supplies and let the guests do the rest!
Liz ZackMakeover time! You can get tons of colorful, inexpensive hair accessories, feather extensions, tattoos and hair chalk on Amazon, all of which helped guests transform into their most rocker-chic selves. Liz hired a teenager to man the styling station and helped the girls apply the flair. Extra cool points!
Liz ZackNo rock star party is complete without a merch table. Mom found these cute trophies in the "Oscar" section of the party store, so everyone can feel like a star. Partygoers also took home a customized CD of Sofia's favorite songs -- another inexpensive party favor you can easily make at home!
Liz ZackMom had these awesome VIP passes customized on Etsy and found the ID passes and lanyards at Staples.
Liz ZackSo what were our little rockers up to at Sofia's bash? Karaoke, of course! Liz already had a microphone at home and tracked down an inexpensive mic stand on Amazon. Here's the birthday girl at "rehearsal."
Liz ZackLiz made a super cool stage by hanging plastic tablecloths like curtains from her gutters (using binder clips to keep them up) and decorated the stage with cut-out stars that you can find at any party store. She framed out the stage on the patio using patterend duck tape and added a scarf to the mike stand to complete the rock show vibe. Easiest DIY ever!
Liz ZackThe partygoers had a blast singing as a group for two hours. Talk about girl power! Originally, Liz considered giving each guest a timeslot to sing, but they had way more fun jamming all together. Who needs a solo career when you've got a whole band?
Liz ZackAnd they still had time for cake! Mom used this easy DIY recipe from Betty Crocker and customized the palette to match the party. The cake template wasnt quite big enough for the number of guests, so Liz enlarged it on her home printer and then made enough cake to fit. She made a few more swaps, like using a homemade cake and icing recipe.
Liz ZackMom and Dad made sure to look the part in classic rocker tees (and lots of eyeliner -- even on dad!). Best. Party. Ever!!!!
