Woodland Hideaway in the Shade

On the southern coast of Maine, Barb and her husband have created a woodland paradise. Red blossoms of rhododendrons brighten shady corners while sparkling green hostas cover the ground under large draping trees. Barb's love of gardening has also lead her to become a community leader for the Garden channel -- be sure to visit her on the message board she helps host, Ask the Gardener.

iVillage: Tell us about your garden. Do you have a favorite spot to relax and enjoy it?

Barb: My garden is a result of many years of planting, moving, replanting and still not being satisfied. We have woodlands, lawns, many trees and shrubs. One of my favorite spots is on a wicker bench in the corner of the back yard, overlooking a really lush plot of grass where I am surrounded by rhododendrons, hydrangeas and hibiscus.

I also love sitting in the Adirondack chairs in the front yard just watching all the birds. Though my hydrangeas are probably at the top of my favorite list, it's hard to pick just one.

iVillage: Do you have a current gardening project? What is it?

Barb: We always have gardening projects. The one we are most involved in right now is replacing the brick walkway that leads from our front door down to our driveway. We are making our own hypa-tufa stone slabs to use for the steps. We are also planting hostas and ferns next to the walkway, and mature shrubs are already growing up both sides. When we are done we will add some moss and creeping plants amongst the stones.

iVillage: What is your biggest gardening challenge?

Barb: Soil. Terrible soil. Pure sand surrounds about two-thirds of the house, and the rest is solid clay.

iVillage: Have any can't-live-without gardening tools?

Barb: First, my husband. Second, my garden tractor. Can't live without my garden tractor.
