We all know that, for the most part, reality shows aren't live. Usually, the people we're watching are already done filming. They are going on with their current lives even as their eight-months-ago lives unfold on TV. And that's fine -- except when their current lives start making headlines while those former lives are just hitting the air.
This just happened on Bravo's The Real Housewives of New Jersey. When news broke of Teresa Giudice's money troubles, her TV self was shamelessly spending her way through Italy. And now it's happened again during the series' current installment, The Real Housewives of D.C. (Thursdays, 9 p.m. ET). The TV version of Cat Ommanney is blissfully wedded to a cool, dashing photojournalist, Charles Ommanney. But the current Cat Ommanney -- who finished filming months ago -- is going through a painful divorce.
The result is a bizarre and disconcerting mix of information. Watch the show, and she's bragging about her "rock star" husband, who pals around with Barack Obama. Or see Charles himself, all blue jeans and rugged, wild hair, snapping her photo.
But when you read the news articles about the couple's present situation, you see these scenes differently. You find yourself watching for signs of stress, any inclination that things are not what they seem. How can you not? You already know about the marital rupture that's ahead of them. “This is a miserable time in my life, and I’m very lonely,” Cat tells the Daily Beast. "I have very few regrets in my life, but [participating in the show] is the one,” Charles tells The New York Times.
Filming ended in November. The marriage ended shortly thereafter. And then there they were onscreen, the seemingly perfect couple. Watching them on the show, and knowing what's soon to befall them, is a little strange. And very sad.
