Jon Gosselin -- of Jon & Kate Plus 8 fame -- isn't the only reality TV dad of mulitples behaving badly. Now papa to six, Bryan Masche (Raising Sextuplets on WEtv) has had a freak out, too. And would it shock anyone to learn that the combination of a huge, insta-family plus reality TV scrutiny strains marriages to the breaking point?
It all started last year, when Gosselin, dad to a pair of twins and sextuplets, managed to make his split with wife, Kate, far uglier than necessary: He dated the young daughter of his wife's plastic surgeon and cavorted around the South of France. He partied recklessly. And he continues to threaten her with lawsuits and regularly hook up with much younger women.
Masche, meanwhile, was arrested on Sept. 11 in Arizona for threatening domestic violence to his wife Jenny. The out-of-control dad was also charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after being threatened by police with a Taser. To top things off, the belligerent Masche posed smiling, orange jumpsuit and all, in his mug shot.
The Masche's marital problems didn't come as much of a surprise to some; in 2009 both parents of the now 3-year-old sextuplets admitted to People magazine that their marriage had issues. "We have totally brutal fights." Jenny said. "When you understand that there's no way out of marriage, that forces you to work on your marriage.
"If we're going to be stuck with each other for the next 80 years, we better make it good." Bryan told People. But if a blow-up is how Bryan reacts to feeling "stuck," 80 years of marriage may not be in the cards. Kate Gosselin, though plagued by Jon's post-separation antics, certainly seems happier now that she's free of Jon.
If the Masches do intend on sticking it out, perhaps they should press 'pause' on the reality TV cameras. Let's face it, not every dad can come off as calm and controlled as father and star of TLC's show 19 Kids and Counting, Jim Bob Duggar. But then again, he's open to adding a 20th to his brood -- so he's far from normal in the first place.
